Are you getting ready to work on your vehicle’s exterior? It’s important that you do your research before working on your car to have a full understanding of the scope of your work to avoid making costly mistakes. Central Alberta Paint & Supplies (CAPS) stocks different brands of primers, including primer spray paint and lacquer options. If you’re stuck on knowing which primer will work best on your car, keep reading the information below.

Why Use a Primer

Primer is used to smooth out small cracks and scratches and to give the paint layer something to grab onto. Using a primer is beneficial for you now, in creating a fine exterior finish, but is also great to extend the lifespan of the paint. Should you do a detailed job the first time, you will save yourself time and money in the future by eliminating the need for another round of touch-ups.

Many types of primer spray paint contain zinc, sometimes called “sacrificial zinc,” that will take on the oxidation process instead of the metal of the car. At CAPS, we offer products like the Endura Primer Caliber Epoxy Zinc that helps prevent corrosion on cars.

Types of Primers

At CAPS, we have both primer lacquer and primer spray paint available. One might be better suited for you than the other, so read below about each to determine which will work best.

Primer Spray Paint

Primer spray paints vary in colour and cost. You can find it in gray, black, beige and more. No tools but giving the can a shake, and it is ready to use. The cost of one spray can range from $30 to $55 per can, containing around 450ml on average. Each can is able to cover approximately 12 square feet. If you are unsure of how many cans of primer spray paint you will need, come in store and talk to any of our expert staff.

Primer Lacquer

Primer lacquer, unlike primer spray paint, requires an airbrush to apply. You can find the parts you need at CAPS to airbrush your primer. When working on multiple vehicles, buying lacquer can be more cost-effective and provide the high-quality base layer that you are looking for.

Tip: Always practice your primer spray paint and airbrush techniques on a sheet of cardboard or other handy material before applying them to your vehicle.
