Wax and grease removers are a type of degreaser that we carry at Central Alberta Paint & Supplies (CAPS). Wax and grease removers are typically made up of solvents designed to help remove grease, tar, wax, and other hard-to-remove grime from various surfaces.
We supply wax and grease removers in aerosol and 4L containers. Having both options available allows our customers to choose which method of application they prefer. Whether you are using aerosol or liquid form, apply generously to the surface and wipe down with a cloth. Repeat this process until the cloth comes away clean.
At CAPS, we supply BASF RM203 (4L container), SEM Solve (aerosol), and Dupli-Colour (aerosol) wax and grease removers. Choose the right product for you by price or application, or speak to one of our staff about which may be best for you.
Uses
Classically, wax and grease removers are super effective at removing wax, road tar, oils, and road grime from car bodies. People who want to care for their items will often use wax and grease removers to ensure the offending materials quickly to avoid oxidation and the development of rust. Used personally and professionally, degreasers are excellent for prepping a car for a new paint job.
You can use wax and grease removers on more than just cars, including motors, bearings, compressors, generators, chains, and more. If working with plastic, there are specific products you’ll require to remove unwanted substances. Be careful when applying degreasers to plastic. Many of these products will create small cracks or make the plastic brittle or too soft.
Safety Precautions & Best Practices
Wax and grease removers often contain highly flammable elements. There are a few ways you can make sure that you use these solvents properly:
- Read the label and store it appropriately. Never store them near open flames or in hot areas, and never use them in confined spaces.
- Ventilation is a necessity when working with these products to ensure your safety. The fumes are toxic, and there have been documented cases of workers suffering major health effects.
- Never substitute a degreaser for supermarket dish soap or homemade alternatives. These can leave a film behind that can affect the longevity of the paint that is applied shortly after. In addition, mixing chemicals can be extremely dangerous.
- Do not turn on electric components until the degreaser has flashed off (until the solvent has evaporated completely).
If you follow these guidelines, along with all precautions and warnings on the label, you will be safer when using the product. If you have questions about your wax and grease remover, ask any of our staff when you are in one of our Alberta locations.
