Alberta may have had an unseasonably warm winter across the board, but thankfully for snowmobile enthusiasts, Mother Nature still managed to ensure there were a few solid occasions to allow for a day on the powder! As one of central Alberta’s favourite pastimes, knowing how to care for your sled is crucial to staying safe. While your winter ride may already be in storage, the reality is, that it’s never too early to get ahead of next season and take a closer look at individual parts to ensure you’re ready to ride when the snow comes back to play.

Below, we’ll take a look at 5 key parts to stay on top of for maintenance and repair in order to keep your snowmobile in prime condition. Read on to learn more.

1. Your Brakes

Brakes are important for safe riding, and over time, will begin to degrade with heavy riding. If it’s been a while since you’ve checked your brakes (you should routinely), give your brake pads a thorough inspection. Worn pads can compromise your ability to stop when it matters most, and if yours are looking worse for wear, or if you happened to experience any difficulty stopping last season, replace your brakes as soon as possible. This is not a repair you want to wait on.

2. The Drive Belt

Drive belts will eventually begin to show their age, and rough conditions, as well as heavily fluctuating temperatures as encountered last year’s season, can accelerate damage.

Inspect the drive belt for signs of wear, cracks, or any visible damage. If you see any issues, it’s best to start looking for a replacement. Taking a look before high demand kicks in for next year gives you the ability to save, and buy parts at their best price during the off-season! As a bonus tip, carrying a spare drive belt with you while riding is a great way to stay prepared in case you encounter an unexpected issue while riding.

3. Cooling System

In order to run effectively, your snowmobile must be able to cool and avoid overheating. It’s important to take a routine look at your cooling system during, before, and after the main riding season to catch early signs of damage. Shiny belts are a key indicator of slippage, for example, and will need immediate attention. Checking during the off-season is the best way to avoid headaches next winter, and gives you the upper hand when it comes to repairs.

4. Suspension

Just like your brakes play a key role in how your machine operates, your suspension system is integral in ensuring a smooth ride.  Examine your sliders or hyfax (slider shoes) for visible signs of wear, and look into repairs and/or replacements as necessary.

5. Air Box

Finally, always look at your air box, specifically looking for any debris or dirt that may have accumulated.  Clear out foreign particles as needed, and replace the air filter if it shows any signs of wear. A clean air box is crucial for engine performance and longevity, and routine check-ups/cleanings are a great way to maximize your fun in the winter sun!
