Heavy-duty equipment endures harsh environments, which wear down the paint over time. At some point, you will want to refresh your equipment. Keep reading if you’re ready to learn the fundamentals of making your CAT Yellow Paint last.

What is CAT Yellow Paint?

CAT Yellow Paint is the official paint colour for Caterpillar Machinery. It’s available in spray cans and gallon pails, either individually or in bulk. The formula is durable, weather-resistant and UV-stable, which means it will resist damage from the sun over time. It’s perfect for tough job sites. CAT Yellow paint protects from corrosion and maintains the OEM quality.

Best Uses for CAT Yellow Paint

CAT Yellow paint isn’t a colour you’d have just lying around. It has specific uses:

  • Heavy-equipment touch-ups: For example, Excavators, Dozers, skid steers and loaders
  • Restorations and rebuilds: Giving new life to old equipment
  • Custom build and fabrications: Give new parts a cohesive finish
  • Industrial equipment: For example, Generators, Trailers, Forklifts, or Tanks.
  • Branding consistency: Maintain a professional look across your fleet

Step-By-Step Guide: How to Apply CAT Yellow Paint

CAT models and other industrial equipment are frequently exposed to harsh environments and chemicals, which can result in aggressive wear and tear that degrades their bright yellow paint at an accelerated pace. It’s important to correctly apply your paints to ensure long-lasting durability and the finish you’re looking for.

Choose the right product

Spray can:  good for small touch-ups and tight spots

Quart or Gallon: Better for large areas and can be brushed, rolled or sprayed on.

Surface preparation is key

Thoroughly clean and remove grease, dirt and any rust to begin prepping the surface. Sand or wire-brush the rust off to clean the metal. Be sure to wipe debris clean with a solvent or a tack cloth. Cover and tape off any part of the equipment you’re not trying to paint.

Applying primer

Apply primer, especially on bare metal surfaces, for optimal paint longevity. We recommend a rust-inhibiting primer. Ensure that the primer is thoroughly dry before applying the first coat of paint. The drying time will depend on your choice of primer.

Applying CAT paint

Make sure the paint is well-mixed. Shake or stir it to fix any paint separation. For spray cans, hold 8 “-12” away from the painting surface and apply light coats, allowing them to dry for at least 15 minutes between coats. For the gallon size, prepare a sprayer or a roller for even coverage on the paint surface. Again, allow time to dry for larger areas, at least an hour between coats. For each type of application, multiple thin coats are better than one thick one.

Drying and curing

Allowing proper dry time will ensure the longevity of your paint. We recommend 56 hours before handling any recently painted equipment. Applying a clear coat helps your equipment maintain its lustre and significantly extends the lifespan of CAT yellow paint. Clear coats, wax, or other types of sealants protect against UV rays, chemicals, abrasion, and other environmental factors that can otherwise speed up the fading or damage incurred to your paint job. Regular application of protective coatings enhances the durability and appearance of the paint.

Pro Tips for a Long-Lasting Finish

  • Avoid painting in extreme temperatures or direct sunlight. These conditions can cause uneven colour, poor adhesion, or unpredictable drying times.
  • Always wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including a respirator, gloves, and goggles, to protect yourself from the harsh chemicals and fumes.
  • Keep each coat even, and try to avoid drips or runs.
  • We suggest using a paint thinner to create the optimal steady flow when using a spray gun.
  • Label any leftover paint for future touch-ups and keep it in a cool, dry place out of the sun.
