Choose the Right Fit
Before you prepare to apply (more on that in a moment!), it’s crucial to set yourself up for success by getting the right kind of clear coat for your specific job. There are multiple clear coat options available, including acrylic clear coats (dries quickly and easy to apply), urethane (superior durability and UV protection), and high solid clear coats, which are ideal for show cars and high-end projects that need a thicker layer that shines.
At CAPS, we’re happy to help you find out which coat works best for you in-store in Edmonton or Red Deer or through online enquiries!
Preparation is Essential
As with any paint job, preparation is essential for a successful finish. Begin by thoroughly washing your vehicle to remove all dirt, grease, and contaminants. Remember to always use car-safe products (no dish soap here!) and gently dry with a soft microfibre cloth once you’re finished. Once everything is washed, thoroughly inspect your car for rough spots, dust, or other debris that need to be removed.
If necessary, sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (1500-2000 grit) to smooth out any rough areas.
Mix and Prepare the Clear Coat
One of the biggest mistakes people make when preparing their clear coat is failing to follow manufacturer instructions. Most clear coats require mixing with a hardener or activator to initiate the curing process. Use precise measuring tools to ensure the correct mixing ratio, typically found on the product label. Mix the components thoroughly in a clean container to achieve a consistent mixture.
Remember: different clear coats have different instructions. Never assume, always read the manufacturer details for success!
Proper Application Technique
Application technique plays a vital role in the overall finish of your clear coat, and the right tools and methods are essential for success. Follow these tips for the best application possible:
- Use a spray gun and adjust the nozzle settings specifically for the clear coat manufacturer’s recommendations (typically between 20-30 psi)
- Watch your distance: maintain an even distance of about 6-8 inches away from the surface while spraying to avoid runs and sags
- Apply thin coats. Thick coats have a higher chance of running, whereas applying multiple thin coats (allowing time to dry between each) provides much better results.
- Overlap each pass by 50% to avoid striping and ensure a uniform finish. Move the spray gun in a steady, controlled motion to maintain even coverage.
Allow Adequate Drying Time
Rushing the dry time of your clear coat is a surefire way to ruin your hard work. Follow manufacturer instructions for drying time between coats (usually between 10-15 minutes), and allow 24-48 hrs for a full dry after applying your final coat. Be aware that environmental conditions like heat, cold, and humidity can also influence the required dry time outside of standard instructions, so always exercise caution and leave ample time, just in case.
Post-Application Care
Once your clear coat has finished curing, examine the surface closely for any minor imperfections. If necessary, apply light wet sanding to smooth out flaws and follow up with a polishing compound and a high-speed buffer to restore any lacking gloss. Regularly wash and wax your vehicle, and avoid the use of harsh or abrasive chemicals going forward to maximize the longevity of your clear coat!
